Nielsen Consumer Panel Data and Retail Scanner Data

The Consumer Panel data

The Consumer Panel data beginning in 2004, tracks purchases of a panel of 40,000 to 60,000 households who stay on as long as they meet Nielsen’s requirements. The data collected by scanners describes when, where, and at what price, the panelists made purchases in all 10 Nielsen Food and Non-Food Departments which together account for about 1.4 million UPC codes. Panelists are geographically dispersed and demographically balanced. Each panelist is assigned a projection factor, which enables purchases to be projectable to the entire United States.

Retail Scanner Data

The Retail Scanner Data consists of weekly pricing, volume, and store merchandising conditions generated by retail store point-of-sale systems from approximately 35,000 participating grocery, drug, mass merchandiser, and other stores from approximately 90 retail chains covering all US markets. Products from all Nielsen-tracked categories are included in the data, such as food, non-food grocery items, health and beauty aids, and select general merchandise. The data is available starting 2006, with updates being made on an annual basis. Updates are expected to be available in the first quarter of each calendar year, and will lag by 2 years (e.g. 2013 Retail Scanner data is expected to be released in January 2015).

More information on both datasets is available here.

These data sets are only available to tenured or tenure track faculty and PhD Students under their supervision at UNC-Chapel Hill. Please email David Ernsthausen ( for more information and requests for an account.
